The Trinamool Congress government on Thursday told the Calcutta High Court that it allocated Rs 2.87 crore to rebuild houses that were destroyed in the violence at Canning in the South 24-Parganas district on February 19. Complying to the High Court’s order, the government on Thursday filed a status report on the incident saying 148 houses were severely damaged during the violence. It also added that the district administration handed over of Rs10,000 to each of the 117 families affected by the violence. The SP of the district in its status report on the investigation stated that a headmaster of a local school instigated a section of local people as a result violence broke out there. Kausik Chanda, the counsel of the petitioner, however, raised a doubt on the government’s report saying “it was difficult to believe that the state government allocated a huge amount of money for the relief of the locals”. The case will be next heard on April 25.
