The State Election Commission (SEC) has ordered an inquiry into the death of a 55-year-old man in firing by central forces at Ratua in Malda on Monday.
Abdul Mannan was killed when the CRPF jawans deployed on duty during the fourth phase of panchayat elections fired six rounds on a mob of villagers who became restive over slow polling.
The police said the trouble began when local Congress candidate for the seat,Mozahar Hossein, led a group of people to sort out the matter with polling officers.
The security guards stopped them from approaching the booth and there was a heated exchange between the villagers and the security personnel during which one jawan allegedly hit Mozahar with the butt of his rifle.
While an profusely bleeding Mozahar was taken to Araidanga rural primary health centre, the angry villagers are said to have attacked the CRPF jawans, injuring four of them. The jawans reportedly first resorted to lathicharge and then fired six rounds.
Mannan was hit on his back and died instantly.
It was learnt that Mannan,a Congress supporter, had set out of his house around 10 am to cast his vote at the polling booth set up at Sambalpur High School.
Nimai Basak,a local Congress leader, said a CRPF jawan hit Mozahar with his rifle butt.
The district official rushed to the polling booth where voting was stopped for some time.
