The pro-Trinamool Congress faction of officers has swept the organisational polls of West Bengal Civil Services (Executive) Officers association that were held at a Kolkata auditorioum on Sunday. Saurav Chaki and Debashish Maity defeated their nearest rivals Abhijit Mukherjee and Jyotishman Chattopadhyay for the posts of secretary and president respectively with a huge margin — Pro-Trinamool faction won by 561 to 198 votes.

This is for the first time that the association, since its inception in 2003,went for an election to choose its managing committee of 36 members. Since it came into existence, the association of the top babus was being run by the same set of people with Neeloy Ghosh, now special secretary (small and medium-scale enterprises) as its president and Pradip Jana, now joint secretary in the department of sports,as the secretary.

With the change in the government, both Ghosh and Jana, considered pro-Left,opted out of the race and instead fielded Abhijit Mukherjee, now in compulsory waiting, for the post of secretary.

And as lobbying reached fever pitch,Abhijit Mukherjee allegedly sought the blessings of a close relative of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. However,it did not work,as the chief minister ordered the transfer of Mukherjee who in the first week of this month was removed from his post and put in compulsory waiting.

“We tried to be united but we could not. However I don’t think we will now go fighting with each other. I am sure we will work together not only for the welfare of the officers but for the good of the entire state,’’ said Neeloy Ghosh after the poll outcome.
