St Xaviers College will get 16 acres to set up its third campus and Presidency University will get 10 acres for its second campus,it was decided at a cabinet meeting today.
Felix Raj,principal of St Xaviers College, said they were very happy with the decision. We have decided to set up an MBA centre,a private engineering college and a science research institute at the third campus, he said.
We had appealed to the chief minister six months ago to give us land for our third campus and we are lucky to have received it.
Vice-Chancellor of Presidency University Malabika Sarkar also welcomed the decision. She said that to make Presidency a world-class university,a second campus is needed. The first campus is being renovated, but there is no space for research centres.
She said it did not matter that St Xaviers had got more land, but that she was lucky that the government had heard her appeal. Plans are afoot to set up a faculty guest house and start a multi-departmental project at the second campus. It was learnt that 20 acres was originally allotted to the health department at Rajarhat for setting up a medical college, but it was found that only 10 acres was needed. This 10 acres was allotted to Presidency University, sources said.
