A public interest litigation has been filed in the Calcutta High Court challenging the West Bengal CID’s action of writing to Facebook,a social networking site,to delete “objectionable” pictures of Mamata Banerjee. The CID recently wrote to Facebook asking it to delete the pictures on the basis of a complaint lodged by a Trinamool Congress activist. The PIL,filed by advocate Bimal Kumar Shai, also urged the court to intervene in the arrest of Jadavpur University professor Ambikesh Mahapatra for allegedly circulating the cartoon of Mamata Banerjee. Advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharjee, counsel of the advocate, told the division bench headed by Chief Justice Jaynarayan Patel that the police action amounted to interference with freedom speech or expression of a citizen. Chief Justice Patel said the state human rights commission had already taken up the issue, and called for a report from the police. The case is likely to come up for hearing on Friday.
