A CONGRESS member of Sadal gram panchayat in Murshidabad’s Khargram and her husband were allegedly abducted at gunpoint late Monday by alleged Trinamool Congress workers. The member, Tumpa Marjit, is the Congress candidate for panchayat pradhan polls to be held on August 30.
While police on Tuesday night claimed that Marjit has been found, her husband had returned home on Monday itself. He had claimed after their abduction, they were taken away in a car. After a while, he was asked to get down from the car and return home. The kidnappers then allegedly left with Marjit.
State Congress president Adhir Chowdhury described the incident as the “handiwork” of Trinamool. “Even after being found, police are yet to send Tumpa Marjit home. This shows the police are trying to make her say that she was not kidnapped. They had come to her house and wanted her husband to come over to the police station alone so that they could force him to sign a letter saying that he was not abducted,” Chowdhury claimed.
Earlier in the day, Chowdhury had said: “They have abducted her because they could not entice her into joining Trinamool. The intention is to take over the gram panchayat.” The party had also blocked National Highway-34, which was lifted after police assured that action would be taken in the matter.
The district Trinamool leadership, however, brushed aside Congress’ allegations. “The Trinamool Congress is making inroads in Murshidabad, which was considered to be Chowdhury’s stronghold. He is so rattled that after a party member goes missing, he tries to blame us to gain some sympathy and political mileage,” said Mannan Hossain, the district party president.
