Over 60 award-winning puja committees on Tuesday participated in a roadshow at Red Road in Kolkata, during a Durga Puja carnival organised by the state government, to parade their idols in colourful tableaus before immersing them in the Hooghly river.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Cabinet were present at the carnival, and lauded the efforts of puja organisers to turn the event into a “mega affair”. The event, which had a turnout of around 50,000 people according to the state government, was also attended by a host of dignitaries including representatives from several consul generals.
The state government had asked puja committees to promote sports ahead of the FIFA Under-17 Football World Cup, which is taking place in the country. Kolkata will host eight world cup matches, including the finals on October 28, at Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan. Members of the participating countries and FIFA officials were also invited to attend the carnival. Almost every puja committee took out a special tableau which promoted the world cup.
Some of the committees which took part in the carnival are Suruchi Sangha, Ekdalia Evergreen, Naktala Udayan Sangha, 95 Pally, Sreebhumi, Kalighat Milan Sangha and Chetla Agrani 25 Pally, among others.
The committees also took the opportunity to promote several state government schemes such as Kanyashree, Yuvashree, Safe Drive Save Life and Sikshashree.
