FIFTY-SIX-YEAR-OLD Sandhya Sen is battling for her life. The reason being the miserable state of infrastructure in government hospitals of the state.

Affected by swine flu,Sen,a resident of Cossipore in north Kolkata, was admitted to Beleghata ID Hospital on Wednesday morning and was immediately quarantined to an isolation ward.

However, she was left without any ventilator support — a life support system which is must for swine flu patients as they find it difficult to breathe. Till Thursday night,no ventilator support was provided to her. Her condition later turned critical.

The reason that the hospital authorities did not provide any ventilator support to her was not because of any medical negligence but for the reason that the hospital has only two ventilators, which are being used by other two patients.

Hospital authorities admitted that there was no spare ventilator at the hospital as five of them were shifted to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital for setting up the sick newborn care unit. The hospital had seven ventilators at the isolation ward, but five were been shifted to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital.

Authorities said they were in talks with the health department to procure more ventilators for the isolation ward .

“We are trying our best to procure a ventilator and install at the hospital soon,” said Asit Biswas, spokesperson of the health department.
