The West Bengal Congress Wednesday made it clear that it will contest the 2014 general elections on its own and will not enter into any alliance with the ruling Trinamool Congress, which,it alleged, had tortured and attacked party supporters during the recent panchayat polls.

“We will fight alone the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. Party’s performance in the panchayat elections is no indication of Congress withering away in the state,” said state Congress chief Pradeep Bhattacharya.

Addressing the foundation day celebrations of Chhatra Parishad, the students’ wing of Congress,at Mahajati Sadan,Bhattacharya said,“We will continue our fight against the TMC.”

Senior party leader Manas Bhuniya alleged that more than two years after it gained power, the TMC is yet to fulfil its election promises. “The TMC had promised to hand over the Matri Sadan, which was taken over by the CPM,to Chhatra Parishad. It is yet to materialise,” Bhuniya said, while exhorting those present to take to the streets to reclaim the Matri Sadan for the student body.

Referring to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s appeal to the student community to use the Internet to wage a war against the Central government,he said,“She alleged that the Centre has sold the country, but she did not mention that the democratic rights of students in Bengal have been encroached upon as college elections have remained suspended for months now.”

He also said that CPM and the CITU had resorted to violence in the past but never kept the students bereft of their democratic rights.

On the issue of principal and professors of Meghnad Saha College at Itahar being assaulted by some alleged TMC workers after the wife of a Trinamool leader was caught cheating in exam,he said,“Under the TMC reign, the education system has touched rock bottom. Almost every day,we hear about a teacher or a principal being manhandled.”

Congress leader Arunava Ghosh, who was summoned yesterday to the bar of the West Bengal Assembly for breach of privilege and detained till the House closed, attacked TMC,saying it was a party run by a dictator.

“The party has only one leader Mamata Banerjee, the rest are all washermen,” Ghosh remarked.
