Calcutta High Court Friday directed Nadia SP to ensure free and fair polls are held in Chakda Municipality on September 21 following petitions filed by 14 CPM candidates who said free and fair polls were not possible in the Chakda municipality in Nadia district due to intimidation and strong-arm tactics of the ruling party. The petitions filed by Sibshankar Sil and 13 candidates of the CPM alleged they could not not conduct election campaigns out of fear of the ruling party workers. They alleged their houses were attacked,but police did not provide adequate security. Justice Banerjee directed the SP to ensure that agents of all political parties sit in polling booths according to the legal provisions and guidelines be framed by the Election Commission.
