Octogenarian Gayetri Devi was not batting her eyelid as she kept glued to the TV set to see her daughter and now the country’s new Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee present the rail budget.

Despite her high blood sugar and ill-health,she listened to her daughter’s speech with rapt attention and intermittent smiles at the family’s Kalighat residence.

“I am very glad how my daughter has chalked out things. But let us wait for tomorrow to read what people think about it,” Gayetri said and added she always wanted her daughter to become messiah of common people.

From 12 noon, she and the rest of family members, including Trinamool Congress chief’s two sisters-in-law — Lata Banerjee and Kalpana Banerjee— brother Babun, uncle and party leader Shobhondeb Chattopadhyay, watched the budget presentation.

In between, she would ask questions like,“Finally did Bengal get five new trains or four? What did she say?” During the entire period, excited murmurs,a few light-hearted arguments and comments were heard.

The most elated seemed to be Mamata Banerjee’s sisters-in law. “We are extremely proud and in high spirits. We did expect the budget to be a good one,but did not expect it to be so good. It’s definitely for the people. We have been waiting all night for Didi to present her budget,” said Lata.

The scene at the Trinamool’s party office in Kalighat was no different. The office opened its doors at 8 am with supporters and party men streaming in from 11 am. Even a few metres away from Banerjee’s house,TV sets were switched on at shops.

“I have not missed a second of the budget. Besides her being the railway minister, she is also our Didi. I think she did the best job, benefiting the rural people, students and a cross section of the society,” said Biswajit Samanta, who works in a store,in the vicinity of Trinamool chief’s house.

As the budget speech came to an end,Trinamool supporters in the city celebrated with rosogollas and abir on the streets. A life-size cut-out of Mamata Banerjee was fed with misti as slogans of the Trinamool reverberated through the area.
