Press Council of India chairman Justice Markandey Katju, known for his critical observations on political functionaries,on Saturday heaped praises on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, describing her as a leader with “integrity of the highest order” in the country.

Katju who came to the city to attend a programme, also met the Chief Minister at Writer’s Buildings. He described her as a “person of outstanding quality” and “a very honest and fearless political leader”.

“I want to say to the people of Bengal, rather to the people of India, that they have got a great leader in Mamata Banerjee. She is a leader of great qualities and impeccable integrity. She has the integrity of the highest order in India,” Katju, flanked by the Chief Minister, told reporters.

“She lives in a small house…,she lives a simple life and wears simple clothes. She does not have a foreign bank account and there is not even one allegation of corruption against her.”

“I have been watching reports about her which appeared unfair. The people who are critical about her should think about it and see what an honest politician she is. It is not fair to criticise her,” Katju said.

“She cannot be compared with politicians of our country as most of them have allegations of scams and scandals against them. There is no scam against her when allegations of scams are in plenty against many political leaders in the country. She is free of any corruption.”

Significantly,Katju, who had earlier criticised Mamata for the arrest of a Jadavpur University professor for forwarding a cartoon on the chief minister and for her government’s press accreditation policy, turned critical against the media.

“Nobody is perfect. Everybody has defects…. But her outstanding qualities overshadow her defects. She is working hard for the uplift of the state and she has deep sympathy for the poor. So,It is not fair to criticise her. They (the media) should see her outstanding quality and not defects,” he said.
