The unnatural death of a villager at Gajole in Malda district has triggered another row on Sunday with the CPM claiming that he was a farmer having committed suicide due to mounting debt. Family sources said Dayal Chandra Burman, the villager, consumed pesticide this afternoon after failing to pay Rs 30,000 he had taken as loan some days back. As the news of Burman’s death spread, senior Bengal CPIM leaders such as Shyamal Chakraborty and Md Salim went to his native place Duhuchi and said that the deceased was a small farmer who had to commit suicide after failing to get the proper price for his agriculture produce. “The government is not acknowledging the issues related to farmer’s suicides. This is unfortunate,” the two leaders said. Sources said there was no complaint about debt-related suicide lodged by the family and circumstances behind the death could not be confirmed.
