A major blaze gutted one of the oldest single-screen movie theatres in Kolkata, the Jyoti Cinema, on Sunday, a fire department official said. The cinema located in central Kolkata’s Esplanade area was founded in the mid-1930s and was shut down in 2008.
“A fire broke out 2.10 a.m. and destroyed the entire hall. As many as 26 fire tenders were pressed into service,” the official said. The blaze was brought under control at around 4.35 a.m.
