A man was killed and a woman injured after a portion of a building wall collapsed during a squall in the city, police said on Thursday.
The two got trapped under the wall of an office called Nadia House, which was damaged when an adjacent tree collapsed in Bright Street area on Wednesday. The disaster management team of Kolkata Police swung into action to pull out the two from under the rubble.
The injured woman, who had been passing by at the time of the collapse, was rescued and admitted to a hospital on Wednesday night. The body, which belonged to a beggar who is yet to be identified, was found within the debris on Thursday, a police officer said. The exact cause of his death will be known after a post mortem.
Three people were killed and six others injured in separate incidents of tree fall when a storm accompanied by rain hit the city and coastal areas of West Bengal on Wednesday. While two people were killed at Jadavpur, one pedestrian lost his life at Beliaghata in the northern part of the metropolis, according to the police. At least 70 trees were uprooted in and around the city due to the squall.
The deep depression which paralysed the metropolis on Wednesday night moved over to Jharkhand on Thursday.
