Kolkata: Seven held for ‘assaulting’ traffic cop

Seven persons were arrested after the body camera on a traffic sergent showed them allegedly assaulting the officer on Saturday evening at Panditiya Road in Kolkata. According to police, traffic sergeant Golok Sarkar was manning a crossing near Panditiya Road in South Kolkata. In the evening, he stopped a motorcycle whose rider was allegedly not wearing a helmet. The rider allegedly argued with the him and refused to pay the fine. He later allegedly called some local youths, who started assaulting the sergeant.

The sergeant then lodged a complaint with Gariahat police station. Cops scrutinised the footage from the body camera on the sergeant and the seven were identified and later arrested.

This is the second time in a week that a police officer was beaten up on duty for stopping helmetless rider. “We are dealing with such matters with a firm hand,” said a senior Kolkata police officer.

On Friday, assistant sub inspector of Park street police station Himadri Chakraborty stopped a helmetless rider near Collin’s street crossing. The rider Sheikh Sikandar allegedly called up a number of youths in the area who beat up Chakraborty and even tore his uniform. Later a strong contingent of police personnel reached the spot and rescued Chakraborty. Sikandar was also arrested.
