To avoid a scam-like situation such as the constable recruitment scam in Kolkata Police that hit headlines in 2008,the Kolkata Police Recruitment Board has decided to plug loopholes in the selection process by roping in a central government undertaking that will make the whole recruitment drive error free and transparent.
Equipped with sophisticated modern electronic gadgets,the officials of the agency will conduct physical measurement tests and field examinations of the candidates who will clear written examinations. Kolkata police is going to recruit more than 1,000 personnel at various levels such as constable,lady constable,driver and sergeants.
More than 5.5 lakh applicants have applied for the posts of constables,lady constables and drivers. Another 60-65,000 candidates have applied for the posts of sergeants. Recruitment of sergeants will take place first,followed by recruitment of constables,lady constables and drivers.
A member of the recruitment board told The Indian Express that the decision to outsource a part of the recruitment process was taken to ensure that no one could question the recruitment process. The name of the agency selected for conducting physical measurement and field examination of the successful candidates has not been disclosed for the sake of maintaining transparency and to eliminate the risk of manipulation. This is the first time that such a model has been adopted.
