The body of a young law student with a gunshot wound on her forehead was found on the Kalyani Expressway, a stone’s throw from Suniti BEd College, on Thursday night. The woman was later identified as 26-year-old Moumita Biswas, daughter of Bimal Biswas, a constable posted in Khardah police station. Her husband Nikhil Sen and a man named Basudeb Das have been detained for questioning, said police sources.
At around 10 pm Thursday, locals heard the sound of a gunshot, after which they informed police, who found the body lying on one side of the expressway. “It seems she was shot at point blank range on her forehead,” said an official. A blood stain indicated she was shot at the same place, and a bullet was also recovered. SDPO, Kalyani, Kaustavdipta Acharya said, “Prima facie it was a fallout of her love affairs with several boys. She had extramarital affairs with a number of people and led a reckless life.”
“The clothes of the victim are intact, which means the motive was not sexual assault. Once we receive the post-mortem report, things will be clear. She was married and we have detained a few people for interrogation,” added Acharya. According to sources, Moumita was a first year student of S K Acharjee Institute of Law in Kalyani. On Thursday, she had left for college but did not return home.
Police said that Moumita lived in a paying guest accommodation near her college in Patulia, while her husband Nikhil lived separately in Titagarh, North-24 Parganas. Moumita was allegedly very active on social networking sites. Her friendships with men had irked her husband, and the couple was heading for divorce, said sources.
