Kolkata: Four NSIC officials held for fraud

Sources in the CID said on July 26, NSIC had lodged a complaint with North police station in Bidhannagar. Later, the case was transferred to the CID.

THE STATE CID Monday arrested four officials of PSU National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC) from Alipore in Kolkata on charges of fraud and embezzlement of public money. Those arrested have been identified as Manik Lal Das (zonal head), Gopinath Bhattacharya (deputy general manager), Pradip Karmakar (accounts manager) and Jayanta Das (manager marketing). They have been accused of procuring a Rs 173-crore loan for opening bogus small scale Industries.

Sources in the CID said on July 26, NSIC had lodged a complaint with North police station in Bidhannagar. Later, the case was transferred to the CID.

In October, the CID arrested one Debabrato Haldar from Garia in Kolkata for allegedly taking a loan from NSIC under the name of a bogus company. During interrogation, Haldar accused the four arrested men of opening bank accounts in the name of bogus companies on the basis of documents that they had forged. He claimed they opened 63 bogus companies and procured loan against the same.

“The exact modus operandi of the group is yet to be ascertained,” said a CID official.
