Firecracker sales in Kolkata has been hit due to the imposition of GST, which resulted in raised prices, some traders and manufacturers said on Tuesday. Speaking to The Indian Express, chairman of Sara Bangla Atasbazi Unnayan Samiti, Babla Roy said: “There has been huge impact of GST on sale of firecrackers this year. Traders have to pay 28 per cent GST for various firecrackers. Earlier, it was 14.5 per cent.”
“There has been a 40 per cent dip in our sales. Traders cannot even reduce the price of their products, as cost of materials required to make firecrackers has also gone up,” he added. Tala Bazi Bazar president Sanjay Kumar Dutta also said smaller traders were hit the most due to GST.
“Local and small firecracker sellers are finding it difficult to sustain their business after GST imposition. With the rise in prices, customers are also not buying enough firecrackers. Although price of firecrackers gets increased every year, customers do not complain. But this year the increased price of fire-crackers is pinching the pockets of customers,” he said. However, sources said traders are still hopeful of doing good business in last-minute sales.
