Biwarup Dey has a reason to smile. The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) joint-secretary worked overtime to bring a truce between Jagmohan Dalmiya and BCCI president N Srinivasan and succeeded. The effort not only made him popular among the “powers-that-be” in Indian cricket but has also opened windows of opportunity for the affable sports administrator from Bengal. He was tipped to become the BCCI’s joint-secretary last year but somehow the plans didn’t work out. The Board, however, has rewarded him with a plum assignment. Dey would be Team India’s manager for the two T20 internationals and tri-series in Australia. Last time, someone from Bengal got this job was Gautam Dasgupta. But that was way back, when Dalmiya used to call the shots in Indian cricket.
Is Chief Secretary Samar Ghosh getting an extension of six months? Rumour has it that CM Mamata Banerjee is very keen on retaining him for the top post because of his “formidable efficiency” in tackling a government in transition. According to sources, the state government has asked for Central government’s approval on Ghosh’s extension. In fact, the way he handled a mercurial Mamata with such an elan that he has earned accolades from all and sundry, and the chief minister herself is putting pressure on the top bureaucrat who is,however, still quite recalcitrant to accept the offer.
Manoj Chakrabarty, the Congress minister who fired salvos against Mamata Banerjee calling her a dictator,is now a relaxed man. Back in Behrampore, his native place,Chakrabarty is enjoying life, travelling by rickshaws, spending time at tea stalls. “I am a man of the masses and I am better off near them,” the maverick leader said.
