Three persons were killed and 18 were injured in an accident on Monday afternoon at the crossing of AJC Bose Road and Belvedere Road. According to police, a vehicle hit two motorcycles before jumping a curb and hitting pedestrians.

The injured were rushed to a hospital. Two of the victims were declared “brought dead”, while one succumbed to his injuries. Saroj Kumar Banik (37), driver of the vehicle that hit the victims, was also injured in the incident and is recovering in the hospital.

Police have initiated a murder case against Banik and said that he would be arrested once he recovers. Police have collected his blood sample to ascertain if he was in an inebriated state when the accident happened.

Mayor Sovan Chatterjee and ministers Firhad Hakim and Arub Biswas visited the hospital. “Most of the injured have been let off after primary medical attention. Police are investigating the matter,” Chatterjee said.
