State food minister and TMC leader in-charge of North-24 Paraganas district Saturday said the “politically motivated movement” at Kamduni village, where a student was gangraped and had later died, has come to an end.

“The government will take care of the victim family and ensure justice to them. The Kamduni Pratibadi Mancha has become defunct. The forum was formed not with the villagers but with the CPM,Congress and BJP people. It was a completely politically motivated movement, which has come to end now,” said Mullick.

“A new forum, called Shantiraksha Committee, has been formed in the area. The new committee includes the villagers who will maintain peace in the area,” he added.

The victim’s family had recently accepted the job offer and a sum of Rs 1 lakh from the government. After taking the compensation from the government, the victim’s family, who were members of the Kamduni Pratibadi Mancha, had quit the forum. They, however, fearing attack from some of the villagers, left the village for few days and took shelter in a neighbouring village.

Mullick, however, said,”The family will return to the village. We are in touch with them. We have arranged for police protection too.”
