A jilted lover shot dead his fiance’s father and fired two bullets at his girlfriend injuring her critically before being lynched by locals at a village near Mongalkote in Burdwan late on Saturday night.

Police said,Anup Singha Roy (22) of Nigan Village stormed the Itta village house of his girlfriend Jayashree,a third year BA student of Chandrapur college near Katwa, around 1.30 am on Saturday and fired two bullets at her. While one bullet pierced Jayashree’s right hand, the other missed her. Hearing gunshots, her father,Sambhunath (55),who was sleeping in the verandah adjacent to Jayashree’s room, rushed in and was fired at. He died on the spot.

Local people, who came in after hearing the gunshots, chased Anup and tied him to a post. They beat him to death before police could reach the spot. Jayashree was shifted to Katwa hospital. Her condition was stated critical.

Police said the three-year relationship between Jayashree and Anup broke in March, following which Jayashree started maintaining distance from him. After desperately trying to speak to her,Anup lost patience and raided Jayashree’s house with a revolver, seized from the spot. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination. No one has been arrested in connection with the lynching so far. An investigation has been ordered into the case.
