Howrah:One person was detained and a huge number of parts allegedly used to make firearms were seized during a joint raid by Delhi Police and local police at an illegal arms manufacturing unit at Bankra in Howrah district, which is going to the polls next week. The raid was carried out on the basis of information available after interrogating Md Rustam,a resident of Munger in Bihar, who was arrested in New Delhi with a firearm made from this illegal unit, police said. A lathe machine and huge number of parts needed to make firearms were seized from the place.
The Congress expressed apprehension over holding of free and fair bypoll, calling the unearthing of the arms-manufacturing unit a shock ahead of the by-election. We had been requesting for central forces to conduct election here and that our apprehensions have been proved true after this incident. It is the inefficiency of the state as well as the fact that the ruling party had instructed the police to keep their eyes shut to these activities, said state Congress chief Pradeep Bhattacharya. He said since the accused duo were TMC supporters,it was proved that the TMC had plans to resort to violence to win the bypoll. A Congress delegation is expected to meet the Governor on Wednesday where they will raise the issue.
