It was a night of horror for elocutionist couple Partho Ghosh and Gouri Ghosh as inebriated youths vandalised their house on Dr S P Mukherjee road in Dum Dum late Wednesday night after the couple’s son, Ayan Ghosh, had asked the youths to turn down the volume of loudspeakers during the immersion procession of Goddess Saraswati.
“It was about 12.45 am. The noise from the crowd of revellers was unbearable. Ayan requested them to turn down the music volume as my wife is ailing and had taken medicine to induce sleep,” Partho said. The request had a negative impact as the youths started abusing and pelting stones, he said.
Partho claims that when he called up the Dum Dum police station, a police van came and remained near our house for some time but left soon. “Thereafter, the youths got even more aggressive. They broke the gate on the ground floor, came up and started kicking on the door while shouting abuses even as those downstairs continued to hurl bricks,” Partho alleged.
“We could never imagine such police apathy. They just came and left after some time. We have been praised across the world but feel insulted in our own locality,” his wife Gouri said.
The police, while rejecting claims of any delay, said a formal complaint has been registered and three persons have been arrested.
