The Calcutta High Court today directed the state government to hold the by-election in ward no 1 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation within September 30.

The division bench of Chief Justice Arun Mishra and Justice Joymalya Bagchi wanted to know from B P Gopalika, the municipal affairs secretary, about the poll date for ward no 1,which had been vacant since December 2011. In reply Gopalika said the poll would be held as soon as possible.

Advocate L C Bihani, counsel of the state election commission, alleged that the SEC had sent several letters to the state government to hold the poll in the vacant seat but the state had remained silent. A total of 22 seats in several municipalities were lying vacant for long but the state government did not take initiative to hold polls there,he pointed out.

Following this, the division bench gave time till September 30 to conduct the poll in ward no 1.
