HC upholds convict’s life sentence

The Calcutta High Court upheld the life sentence awarded to Basab Rambabu,a notorious criminal from Kharagpur,for his involvement in the Gautam Choubey murder case.

The Calcutta High Court upheld the life sentence awarded to Basab Rambabu,a notorious criminal from Kharagpur,for his involvement in the Gautam Choubey murder case. Gautam was the son of Narayan Choubey – a former CPI parliamentarian from Midnapore.

A Division Bench comprising Justices Amit Talukdar and P S Banerjee upheld the conviction of other 12 accused in the case on Wednesday. It also acquitted six persons.

Gautam was shot dead by miscreants at a temple in Kharagpur on September 27,1999. Following the incident,Rambabu,along with several others were arrested. During interrogation,it was revealed that though Rambabu was in Hyderabad when Gautam was killed,he had hatched the murder conspiracy and instructed the killers over the cellphone.

On June 10,2005,the sessions court in Midnapore had awarded life imprisonment to Rambabu for his involvement in the case.
