Adjourning the hearing, the Calcutta High on Friday said it would ask the state government about the policy for the compensation announced in connection with the December hooch in South 24-Parganas district.
Moving a petition, advocate CR Panda has requested the High Court to restrain the state government from paying compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the each of the victims families. About 173 persons lost their lives after consuming illicit country liquor and the state government decided to pay compensation of Rs 2 lakh to each of the victims families. Panda has questioned the rationale behind paying compensation to those who died after consuming illicit liquor. They consume liquor by habit,he said. Compensation is usually paid by state government in case of natural calamity,Panda argued. Moving a separate petition, advocate Subrata Mukhopadyay has demanded CBI inquiry into the incident.
