The Calcutta High Court Thursday directed the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate to file a status report on the investigation against the French national who is alleged to have sexually harassed a woman at their workplace.

A woman employee of a private firm in Salt Lake had on June 21 lodged a complaint with the Electronics Complex Police Station alleging that her firm’s managing director,Francois Nguyen, had sexually harassed and molested her on June 11.

The firm, which operates in collaboration with a French company, did not only ran counter to her complaint, even citing “cultural gap” in the understanding of Francois’ behaviour, but also terminated her contract of employment and that of her husband, who also worked there,in late August.

The complainant’s counsel, advocate Amrita Pandey,on Thursday said the firm did not deal with the matter properly even though there exists a Supreme Court order that lays down guidelines for companies to deal with the cases of sexual harassment at the workplace.

Pandey accused the company of adopting a procedure that could allow Francois to leave the country. The petition filed before the court further alleges that the police, too, did not investigate into the woman’s complaint.Taking note of this,Justice Sanjib Banerjee has asked the police to file a status report on the investigation into the incident.
