HC rejects bail of five Maoists

The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of five hardcore Maoists who were arrested from Maidan area of Kolkata in the first week of December 2010.

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of five hardcore Maoists who were arrested from Maidan area of Kolkata in the first week of December 2010. Kolkata Police had arrested Sudip Chongdar alias Kanchan,CPI (Maoist) central committee member,along with his aides Anil Ghosh,Barun Sur,Bimal Mallick and Kalpana Maity. Police had filed a chargesheet under UAPA and other criminal charges of the IPC. Opposing their bail plea,public prosecutor of the state Debasish Roy said that the case had already reached the trial stage and the hearing of framing of charges are pending in the city sessions court.

CU puts brake on city college elections

KOLKATA: Calcutta University on Tuesday asked around 15 city colleges to stall college election process until further notice. Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das convened a meeting with Kolkata Police brass in which they decided to halt the polls fearing law and order problem.It was decided that new schedules would be given soon to respective colleges for conducting election process.
