Around 250 slum-dwellers,led by Nonadanga Uchhed Pratirodh Committee, put up a blockade at Ruby crossing, near Kasba,at 11am on Wednesday. The slum-dwellers were evicted from Nonadanga slum area on March 30.

To disperse the crowd, police intervened and allegedly started beating up demonstrators. “A huge police force came and started beating everyone, including women and infants, without any warning. They were led by the Tiljala OC. There were no female constables,” said Indrani Dutta,a member of the committee which is supporting the slum-dwellers.

Rita Patra,a pregnant woman who was seriously injured in the lathi-charge,was rushed to Ruby General Hospital. But she returned, knowing well she would not be able to foot the bill. She was later taken to Calcutta Medical College.

“A baby boy and two girls,in their early twenties, were hurt in the lathi-charge,” said Surojit Patra, one of the evicted slum-dwellers.

Some slum dwellers claimed they had been assured of a meeting by KMDA officials, buy Sushanta Chattopadhyay,KMDA spokesperson, denied it. “It was a police operation. The slum-dwellers were given enough time and notice to shift. There will be no further dialogue with them,” he said.

OC of Tiljala PS did not comment.
