Three persons have been arrested for eve-teasing a Class XII student at Mahisadal in East Midnapore district. The incident happened late on Saturday evening when the student was cycling back home from her tuition. Five persons in a goods vehicle allegedly passed lewd comments about her and the one sitting next to the driver tugged at the girl’s dupatta. Losing balance, she fell off her cycle and started screaming for help.

Locals came running to her rescue and the offenders, sensing trouble, tried to speed off. In doing so, the vehicle lost control and hit a bamboo gate put up during Kali Puja.

Two of the five managed to flee the spot but locals caught hold of three, beat them up and later handed over to the police. The three arrested hail from Madhabpur.

Those arrested have been identified as Ganesh Das, Tapan Bera and Surajit Das, a source in the police said and added that they were found in an inebriated state. The police have initiated a suo motu case against the five based upon eye witnesses’ accounts.

The incident took place at a stone’s throw from the office of the Circle Inspector, which has put a question mark on the safety of women here. This is the second such incident of harassment reported from Mahishadal in the past 15 days.

On October 20, three students were on their way to Mahishadal for their tuition classes when a vehicle hit them from behind on National Highway 41, killing one of them and grievously injuring the others.

It had been alleged that two youths in the vehicle were teasing them and the driver lost control and hit them.
State transport minister Suvendu Adhikari has assured that the stretch between Madhabpur and Tajpur in Mahishadal will be concreted in two months.
