Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday accused a section of media for “deliberately misleading people by presenting exaggerated news and spreading canards about the government”.

While launching the festival edition of her party mouthpiece,Jago Bangla,in Kolkata, the chief minister said a particular section of electronic news channels and newspapers are airing and printing concocted news with vested business interests only to malign her government. “They are doing this from business point of view. They want to grow business with the help of exaggerated news. They do not present news, they actually pollute news,” she said.

“False propaganda on rape does not only malign the government but also creates a bad impression on the mind of children. The children are asking their parents what is rape. Do not try to glorify rape,” she advised the media. The state is being projected in such a way that it is the “land of rape”,she said. This is not our culture, she added.

“The situation has reached to such a pass that now a blood-spattered body is put on exhibition by news channels. They poison people’s minds by blowing minor and stray incidents out of proportion. The good work never gets place in the media,” she said.

However, the Chief Minister said she “welcomes criticism” against her. “You can say about me whatever you want. I never mind it. I have not taken the chair of the Chief Minister for power. I served the people when I was not in the power and I will continue to do this when I will not be in power,” she said. Taking a dig at her critics who criticize the government in television channels,Mamata said they are paid by the channels. “They say what the channels want them to say. For them, these channels are a place to earn,” Mamata said.
