Minister for Paschimanchal Unnayan Affairs Sukumar Hansda today said that CRPF jawans posted at Dharampur camp of Lalgarh were hobnobbing with CPM harmads (goons) and demanded their immediate removal. The minister has taken up his demand with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. There are about 80 jawans staying at this camp at Lalgarh.

Hansda’s ire against the jawans was triggered by the alleged thrashing of some Trinamool Congress leaders of Dharampur area a month ago. Since the incident, two jawans from the camp were transferred on a complaint by the TMC.

The minister, however, wants the entire unit removed. “We have definite information that the jawans are in league with the CPI-M cadre. The harmads come there every day, stay there, eat and drink with them and go away. We will ask the Chief Minister that how can a central police force harbour hooligans of the CPI-M and why should not the Ministry of Home Affairs remove them,’’ Hansda told The Indian Express.

The minister also said the CRPF jawans had become a menace for the locals, particularly women. “There is a hospital adjacent to the camp that is visited by the locals. I have very often heard that the jawans,in the name of search operations, harass people, even the women. They feel very much unsafe. We don’t want this kind of unruly jawans in our area,’’ the minister further said.

State Home Secretary Basudev Banerjee said he was not aware of any such complaint. “I will look into the matter tomorrow,’’ Banerjee told The Indian Express. Mamata, before coming to power, had pledged that she would work for the removal of all central forces from Junglemahal. That, however, remained a poll promise with ground realities forcing the government to keep the forces there.
