CPM state secretary and Leader of Opposition Surya Kanta Mishra, in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Monday urged him to reopen two urea manufacturing factories at Durgapur and Haldia.

The letter state that while the Union government has decided to reopen shut urea manufacturing units in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand, two such units in Bengal have been overlooked.

“Following Gas Authority of India Ltd’s (GAIL) announcement to extend gas pipeline from Jagdishpur in UP to Haldia in Bengal, the Centre has recently taken a decision for revival of three closed urea manufacturing PSU units at Barauni in Bihar, Gorakhpur in UP and Sindri in Jharkhand, ignoring two such units at Durgapur and Haldia in West Bengal,” the letter read.

It added that the two units, which will fall within the 2,500-km area where the pipeline will be extended, were shut during 2003-04. “I will request you to kindly issue necessary instructions for the revival of the two closed urea manufacturing units at an early date,” the letter said.
