A Day after Mamata Banerjee and Finance Minister Amit Mitra were heckled outside the Planning Commission office here by those protesting the death of SFI leader Sudipta Gupta, the CPM on Wednesday “condemned” the incident and said it “disapproved” of it.

In a carefully worded statement, the CPM politburo said in the course of the protest,“an incident took place involving Finance Minister Amit Mitra. The CPM has disapproved and condemned this incident,” adding the party will “look into how this has happened”.

However, the party simultaneously lashed out at the Trinamool for “unleashing violence” against the CPM and Left in Bengal following Tuesday’s incident. “The politburo strongly condemns the attacks on the CPM and Left parties offices across Bengal. Many party offices have been destroyed and scores of party cadres and leaders have been injured in these attacks by the Trinamool men,” the party said.

The party demanded the Trinamool take immediate steps to curb these attacks and “a judicial probe into the death of Sudipta Gupta should be ordered without delay”.
