Afraid of the threats that she and her family had been getting,Pooja Shaw, who was hospitalised after she was beaten up by her neighbours for wanting to embrace Islam, has decided not to return home — at least for the time being.

Pooja and her sister,Vinita Shaw who converted to Islam last year, are putting up at a relative’s place in south Kolkata. “They (neighbours) had said they will kill us if we return home. The police were mere spectators when we were attacked last time. This time they said they will either burn our entire family or throw us on the railway tracks,” Vinita said.

She also said her paternal uncle,Kanaiya Lal Shaw’s career had been jeopardised because he was a TMC supporter and the local councillor was an RSP leader.

After The Indian Express reported the incident, the local councillor,Sushil Sharma, promised to visit the household. “I wanted to visit the girl in hospital but decided against it as it could be misinterpreted. As my name has been dragged into the matter for nothing. I will do my best to help them out,” he said.

The sisters are also petrified to go to the police station with their complaint against the investigation officer. “It had been a horrendous experience and I don’t think they will overnight change into citizen-friendly people. And there is a nexus among the police and the offenders. We will probably approach the deputy commissioner concerned soon, with our complaints,” said Vinita. Neighbours had beaten up the entire Shaw family over Pooja Shaw wanting to convert to Islam like her elder sister.
