Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday announced a centre of excellence for agriculture research centre at Chinsurah in Hooghly.

The project will be implemented in collaboration with Israel.

The research centre will come up at Adi Saptagram in Hooghly, where the government is running a kisan mandi — farmers directly sell their produce here.

At least six hectors of land has been allotted for the project, Mamata said while speaking at a government programme in Chinsurah.

“The government has also allotted five acres of land for an agricultural college in Chinsurah and options are being explored to set up an agriculture university in the area on the lines of the one in Kalyani,” said Mamata, who reached Hooghly district — to attend an administrative meeting — through a special cruise over Ganga.

Claiming that the state has received a proposal to set up a food park in the area, Mamata said: “We are conducting a survey for the park.”

“We have also requested the Centre to revive the jute industry here by procuring more jute. As the Centre was not procuring jute for a long time, the structure here has collapsed,” she added.
