The CBI on Monday questioned former Assam Minister and Congress leader Anjan Dutta in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam. Dutta was summoned at the CGO complex in Kolkata for questioning, CBI sources said.
An MLA from Amguri in Assam, Dutta’s residence was searched by the agency officials on August 28, the sources said. CBI sources added that Dutta’s business dealings with Saradha chief Sudipta Sen came under the scanner as he used to publish material for Saradha group.
Before leaving for Kolkata, Dutta denied any role in the Saradha scam. Instead, he claimed he was cheated by Saradha chief Sudipto Sen. “I am yet to get a payment of Rs 56 lakh from him against printing work carried out in my press,” Dutta said. A front-runner for the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president’s post, Dutta owns a daily newspaper apart from a printing press.
Meanwhile, local media reports have claimed that former Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has also been summoned in connection with the scam. Sarma, however, denied getting any call from the CBI.
“As of now, I have no information,” said Sarma, whose residence and the office a TV channel owned by his wife, were searched by the CBI in connection with the Saradha scam in August.
Earlier, former Union minister Matang Sinh and his estranged wife Manoranjana Sinh have also been summoned by the CBI in connection with the Saradha scam. The agency had searched Manoranjana Sinh’s Assam residence in August.
Popular Assamese singer Sadananda Gogoi is now in jail in Kolkata after being arrested in August in connection with the scam.
