Police seized a cache of arms and ammunition from two persons while they were travelling on a private bus at Canning in South 24-Parganas on Monday.

Police seized a cache of arms and ammunition from two persons while they were travelling on a private bus at Canning in South 24-Parganas on Monday.

The duo from whom nine firearms,including one 7 mm pistol,47 rounds of ammunition and 5 kg of explosives were seized have been identified as Mohd Salim and Shamim Ahmed. The bus was plying between Sonakhi in Basanti area to Jamtala in Kultali of the district.

“We had been tracing a gang for about a week and got a tip-off that some people were going to Jamtala where the cache of arms and ammunition would have changed hands,” said Praveen Tripathi,SP of South 24-Parganas district.

Police did not confirm if whether the seized arms and ammunition were meant to create violence during the upcoming panchayat polls. “That can only be confirmed after we have interrogated them thoroughly. We will seek their police custody for interrogation,” he added.

Air passenger held with explosives

Kolkata: A man was arrested at the NSC Bose International Airport in Kolkata on Monday for trying to carry explosive materials in a flight to Malaysia,airport sources said. Mohd Hasan was detained during security check at the airport last night when he was found to carry explosives in liquid and powder form in his hand bag. He was going to Malaysia from Kolkata. Hasan was interrogated at night and arrested this morning,police said.
