At a time the BDR guards in Bangladesh are threatening the fragile democracy, their counterparts in India, the Border Security Force (BSF) jawans, worked overtime on Thursday to ensure a peaceful by-poll in the Bishnupur West Assembly seat, where five companies of the border force were deployed.

“I have not slept for the past 48 hours,” said assistant commandant DM Punetha, who was brought to Bengal from Tripura on the Election Commission’s requisition. “We cannot go to bed unless the electronic voting machines are sent to the strong room,” said Punetha.

The BSF jawans and officers, though, were all ears for any piece of news coming on the mutiny by the BDR guards across the border. “What is the latest in Dhaka? They have some genuine grievances,” said an officer.

BSF companies were deployed in Bishnupur on February 21. For the past five days, the force staged flag marches twice every day. This is for the first time the Central forces were given a free hand to tackle any untoward incident. The EC has already directed the state police that no interference will be allowed in the movement of central forces. “This time,we are acting on our own. Our duty is to help the EC to conduct free and fair poll,” said Deepak Kumar, assistant commandant.
