TWO BROTHERS of a Trinamool Congress Panchayat Samity member were killed when crude bombs, allegedly stocked at their house, exploded at Khoyrasole area in Birbhum late Thursday.
The deceased have been identified as Sheik Hafizul Hossain and Sheik Tarique Hossain. The incident took place around 10.45 pm at the residence of their brother Sheik Jabir Hossain, a member of Panchra Gram Panchayat.
“The intensity of the blast was so high that a portion of the house was blown up… Police are investigating the incident,” Birbhum SP Mukesh Kumar said. While Hafizul died at the spot, Tarique died at Suri Hospital, sources said. Personnel from Khoyrasole and Dubrajpore police stations and RAF have been pressed in to cordon off the area.
Jabir, meanwhile, has claimed the bombs were hurled at his house. However, the SP said: “Initial investigation soes not indicate the possibility of the involvement of any group in the incident. It looks like a number of crude bombs have exploded. Pellets and ropes used to make such bombs have been recovered. We are also checking for other objects.” Hafizul, an accused in the 2012 murder of Trinamool worker Buro Sheik, was absconding. He had only returned to the area a few days ago.
While CPM leaders demanded an investigation by the National Investigating Agency, BJP co-observer for Bengal Sidarth Nath Singh said, “It is another example of Trinamool’s misrule. Anti-social elements are spreading their tentacles in Bengal, which they find as a safe haven. Here, bomb factories are rampant, compared to any industrial initiative.”
When contacted, state Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim said, “At least, Birbhum is peaceful compared to what Lalgarh was during the Left rule. Let law take its own course and justice prevail.”
