Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee today expelled for a day Forward Bloc member Ali Imran Ramz from the House for using “unparliamentary remarks” against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, prompting the Left Front members to stage a walk-out in protest.

When Ali made the remark while participating in the debate on the budget of urban development department, members of the Treasury Bench surged towards the Opposition Bench and tried to catch hold of him. An unsavoury situation was avoided due to intervention from both sides.

Following uproarious scenes, the Speaker, while ordering that the remarks be expunged, suspended the member for the day.

The Left reacted sharply to the expulsion, saying the Speaker was playing second fiddle to the ruling party members. “The decision of the Speaker is undemocratic. It raises the question of the Speaker’s impartiality,’’ Suryakanta Mishra, leader of the opposition, said. The Left then staged a walk-out.

Earlier in the day,the Left members walked out after alleging that the Opposition was not being given enough time and its questions were being avoided. “We are quite upset over the fact that the Opposition was not given the requisite time,” Mishra said.
