The Facebook post shared on Saturday by 21-year-old Sujan Mukherjee that ostensibly triggered violence in Illambazar and Dubrajpur areas of Birbhum district, has been traced to the India-Pakistan Asia Cup match and a conversation Sujan had on social media with Pakistani fans after India’s victory.

According to Sujan’s friend Sheikh Hanif (21), after the match Sujan started approaching chatrooms to poke fun at Pakistani cricket fans. “I don’t think he actually wrote the post, but must have found it somewhere. He became increasingly agitated and started abusing these fans and then, finally shared this post.

Hanif claimed that he was one of the first persons in Gurisha village who asked him to delete his Facebook post. “When we asked him to take it off, saying that it could hurt religious sentiments of the people around him, he accused us of being Pakistanis and harboring anti-national sentiments.”

Hanif added that as more and more people commented on his Facebook timeline, the post went viral in the entire district.Meanwhile, pamphlets with Sujan’s photograph alongwith his Facebook post were being distributed in Muslim-dominated neighbourhoods. “It came as a surprise to us when people in the adjacent district of Burdwan started calling us about the case. But everyone knew what he had done and were demanding that he be brought to justice,” added Hanif.

Fearing further violence, Sujan’s family comprising his father, mother and teenaged sister, has already left the village.

“Sujan was always a polite boy with very strong views. This village is one of the most peaceful places in the district and there has never been such an incident. Right now, I know what he wrote and is beyond my comprehension as to why he would write something of the sort,” said Sujan’s relative, who didn’t wish to be named.
