Bengal Engineering and Science College (BESU) authorities have decided to take disciplinary action against 18 students, with one student being rusticated, for engaging in a brawl with police authorities on the college campus few days back.
BRSU V-C Ajoy Kumar Roy said a brawl took place inside the college campus on April 13 when some students,in an inebriated state, went to a locality nearby to ask for some water. When the local people did not respond to their calls, they started shouting and one of the students Montu Prasad,of the mechanical engineering department beat up some of the local people. When police reached the spot,a clash took place between the students and police in which two policemen of Shibpur police station were injured.
The five-member committee which was formed to probe into the incident completed its report on Sunday and recommended stern action against the students involved.
Roy added that out of 18 students, one final year student of mechanical engineering was rusticated, while two students were suspended for two years . Also, parents of nine students have been asked to meet the V-C and submit a declaration that their wards would not be involved in such incidents in the future. Six students have been disallowed to sit for three papers for the end-of-semester examination. The students will have to sit for these papers next year. Nine students have also been expelled from the hostel premises.
The decision has created a flutter among students of BESU. The students belonging to both SFI and Independent Consolidation (IC) said they will continue their protest if college authorities failed to withdraw the rustication order in case of Montu Prasad.
