Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday attacked the CPM for not doing any work of development in the Sunderbans and Sagar Island during its three and half decade rule and advised the Marxists to “maintain silence instead of running a distorted campaign against the Trinamool Congress government”.

“Fight,if you can fight with us,as far as development is concerned. Do if you can do like us” — was her message to the CPM.

Speaking at a government function during her daylong visit to Sagar Island, where Gangasagar Mela is held,in South 24 Parganas,Banerjee said the “Marxists did nothing” for the Sagar Island, which has “a lot of potential to become a holy place like Kumbha”.

“They did nothing in its 34 years of rule. The repair work of river embankments, which were breached in cyclone Aila, remained suspended for three years,” the chief minister said.

Comparing the performance of her government with the Left front,Banerjee said the previous government had given caste certificates to only 3 lakh people while her government within a year has distributed caste certificates to six lakh people. “Earlier issuance of caste certificates used to take four to six months. Now we have introduced online system for delivering caste certificates. The previous government has given us only a huge debt burden for which we are having a tough time to carry out development activities,” Mamata said.

“We have taken up many programs which would bring the entire Sagar island in the world’s tourist maps. Earlier, there was power crisis in the area. Now ,the power situation has improved. The roads have been widened and water crisis is solved. The jetties have been renovated. I can see the real change,” she said.

“The face of Sagar Island will change as the deep sea port will bring more development to the area. There will be new scope of employment,” said Banerjee.

“The state government will provide 3 cottahs of land to 1-1.5 lakh landless people within a year under Nijo Bhumi Nijo Griha scheme,” she announced and added: “There will be not a single poor family that will have no shelter within five years in the state,” she promised. Mamata said she has instructed her officials no bring all farmers under Kishan Credit Card and Crop Insurance Scheme.
