Police made a miraculous recovery of the baby who was stolen from National Medical College Hospital on Friday. Acting on a tip-off that the stolen baby was kept at a house on Broad Street in South Kolkata after being sold, police identified the shelter and summoned the family who had taken custody of the baby. An elderly woman later deposited the baby to Beniapukur police station and the four-day-old was taken back to National Medical College and admitted as the infant had caught cold.

During investigation it was found that a couple by the name of Nilofar Rahaman and Sheikh Raju, who stayed in Sonarpur, was interested to buy a baby. Nilofar’s relative was admitted to the same ward where the woman on another bed had delivered the baby. Nilofar’s relatives had become close to the expectant mother even before her delivery and took care of her. On Wednesday, the woman had delivered the baby and Nilofar’s relatives took care of the woman helping her take medicine. They later administered a sedative when the woman had complained of severe pain and as she slept, they took the baby and sold it to the couple. Nilofar and Raju then kept the baby with their mother in Broad Street. The couple have been detained by the police. Further investigation is on,said police.
