As many as 18 bodies were found dumped in a stationary truck at Kanapukur in North 24 Parganas’ Barasat area on Monday.

The unclaimed bodies were reportedly taken to Panihati crematorium from Barasat morgue, but the crematorium authorities refused to cremate the bodies. Following this, the driver brought the truck to Nabapalli ground at the dead of the night and left it there.

In the morning, the bodies — covered in polythene sheets — started emanating foul smell, which alerted the locals. Local Councillor Champak Das reached the spot. Later, Barasat police station officers arrived and moved the truck.

“We are looking for the driver who had left the truck here,” said a senior officer of Barasat police station.

Sources at Barasat Hospital claimed unclaimed bodies from the morgue are disposed of at regular intervals. If identification on the basis of religion is not possible, the bodies are cremated.

According to norms, the driver and helpers who carry these bodies do so only after receiving a written permission from the district magistrate. Moreover, the morgue would not to take back the bodies. “Thus, the driver must have dumped the bodies,” said a hospital employee.
