A 12-year-old mentally challenged girl was allegedly raped and murdered in Noapara area of North 24 Parganas. The victim,Tumpa Biswas, was missing since August 23. Locals said she was last spotted on that day around 11 am at the river ghat.

Her maternal grandfather,Narayan Chandra Das,at whose residence Tumpa and her estranged mother Dolly Biswas lived at Old Burning Ghat Road, had lodged a missing complaint with the Noapara police station. The people from the area carried out a search on a motor boat and her body was fished out on Friday near Sodepur.

“She had no clothes on,there was an injury mark at the back of her head, her hair had been burnt and she had burn marks of cigarette on her back,” said a witness who was part of the search team.

Family members of Tumpa alleged that she was raped and then murdered but the police said a rape case cannot be started before the post mortem examination report comes. Local Congress members staged a protest in front of Noapara police station on Saturday, demanding a probe and quick arrest of the offenders.
